The terraced landscapes around the steep hills of the Amalfi coast are used for agriculture. However, due to the labour-intensive work and remote locations these spaces get abandoned and the walls start crumbling. This wall was restored by a local worker with natural material by the same way it was build many years ago.
The community garden terrace of Acarbio

In this garden the old and nearly forgotten tomato type “Re Umberto” has found its refugium nowadays. The seeds of the vegetable were saved by local farmers, while other types dominated the terrace landscapes.

Wine making at ACARBIO
January 13, 2023Short description of the building/place:
A lot of families own small vineyards in the Amalfi region. This year, also the association of ACARBIO used their vineyards to produce the drink to safe the terraced places of abandonment. For the procedure of winemaking only regional tools were used like hundreds of years ago.
RESCUEed chestnut hain
January 13, 2023Short description of the building/place:
While lemon trees are prevalent near the shore of the Amalfi coast, chestnut trees can be found on higher latitudes. These chestnut hains are part of the cultural and natural heritage in Tramonti and have recently been threatened by abandonment. The trees do not only give a habitat for animals, but also an income for the local farmers. This forest in the area of Tramonti was abandoned for some years until the team of Acarbio dedicated a month in autumn 2022 to its reclaiming.

Event description: Event for all interessted people to collect chestnuts and enjoy a lunch together in nature, based on chestnuts. After the collection various types of food made from chestnuts were provided. People took bags of chestnuts home with them to enjoy this autumn treasures.
Porta Galliera

The gate remained from the former medieval wall of Bologna, during the years it got renovated several times. Today, one association is hosted here, with the focus on helping migrants. Language classes and intercultural evens are happening each week, while help is also given with writing the curriculum.

Làbas Bologna

“Làbas is the political collective that occupied the former Masini barracks in Via Orfeo on 13 November 2012 and now lives in the former San Leonardo convent in Vicolo Bolognetti.
By occupying the former Masini barracks, Làbas has rescued an area covering approximately 9000 square metres in the heart of Bologna from abandonment, degradation and real estate speculation, returning it to the neighbourhood, the city and the community.” (labasbo.org)
Piazza del Cinema

Short description of the building/place:
The square, designed to serve the Venice Cinema Festival, is invisibly infrastructure to potentially allow the activation of events during the other months of the year, but especially to give back a free public space to the inhabitants of the Lido island: mums with prams, skaters, kids playing with the water fountain, old people relaxing under the shadow of the trees and watching the sea.

Short description of the building/place:
Piazza San Michele was once a symbol of the neighbourhood’s physical and social decay; today it has become a place of redemption and pride, the cornerstone of a process tending to increase civic responsibility and reinforce the population’s sense of belonging.
b. Curved walls, new stairs and the seating system made from cement does not only elaborate the place’s appearance, it also is more resilient to vandalism.
