Murales on the Central Market Square
September 29, 2022Name of the place / building: Murales on the Central Market Square
Short description of the building/place:
28 participants from 5 different countries helped in July and August 2021 RESCUEing an area in Tramonti, the Central Market Square. It is a square in the center of Tramonti that on Saturday mornings hosts the market of the town. Joana Torgal, a Portuguese artist who is part of the AMC association, together with the whole group managed to create a real “manifesto” that tells the essence of Tramonti.
“We aimed to perceive the atmosphere of Tramonti, the empathy, the sympathy of its citizens – said Joana – and the spirit of sharing, characteristics that are not seen but felt in these parts”.
The painting depicts churches, green spaces, mountains, grapes, our ancient tomatoes, lemons, mozzarella, pizzas, liqueurs.
It is an idea of a “neighborhood” with peasants, pizza chefs, vendors, activities such as trekking, traditional dances and the most characteristic vehicles that can be encountered. They thus represented the place that welcomed them, as they saw their eyes and their hearts.

“Sentiero di Eleonora d’Aragona”
September 29, 2022Name of the place / building: “Sentiero di Eleonora d’Aragona”
Short description of the building/place:
The pathway “Sentiero di Eleonora di Aragona” is an old pathway in Tramonti that connect the hamlet Corsano with the cemetery and the hamlet Capitignano. Tramonti is a town along 2 valleys of Tramonti, and Tramonti has a huge network of pathways that in the past were the main connections to get from one place to another. Nowadays, many of them are abandoned.
What is nowadays the cemetery of the town has not always been. It used to be a Castle of Medieval Age, lying on a central position on a hill in the middle of Tramonti, from where the view extends over most part of the territory and is limited only by the Sea in the South and by the mountain chain of the Monti Latteri in the East, West and North.
The pathway is part of the hike of the “13 churches”, a popular hike in Tramonti and can be walked as part of the whole trail or just by itself to visit the cemetery.

Event 1
Event name: Volunteering and visiting the Pathway of Eleonora di Aragona
Event date: 14.7.2022 and 9.8.2022 (same event, 2 different groups of volunteers)
Event description:
In Tramonti, any experience will necessarily include a hike or at least a walk, traditional food, and company. This is therefore also how we organized the site visit to the pathway of Eleonora d’Aragona with 15 international volunteers in the middle of July. We did a cleanup of the environment of the area, we presented the RESCUE project on this occasion, and we discussed the curiosity of the day: How did the Castle of Eleonora D’Aragona become the cemetery?
Together we had fresh lemonade, we discussed the general importance of public spaces and the particular importance of the pathways and terraced landscape for people of Tramonti. And we did this in good company. What would an amazing view over the green valley of Tramonti until the Sea in the South be without being able to share it?
And to answer the open question: the decision to convert the castle to a cemetery was based upon its distance to other parts of the village and its characteristic to avoid contagion of potential illnesses; and it was against its other major characteristic, which is to be a wonderful panoramic point of interest of Tramonti.
The Shelter
September 29, 2022Name of the place / building: The Shelter
Short description of the building/place:
One of the first locations ACARBIO aimed to renovate was Refugio, located in nature-rich Monti Lattari. Historically speaking, the place was built in the early 1900s and was used by the Forest Guards to protect surrounding nature. Later, the shelter was used by random squatters throughout the 1990s until was abandoned.
When ACARBIO first discovered the place, it was filled with anthropogenic waste covered with soil and plants. The structure of the building was damaged, the roof and walls were weak, and moss and nature overwhelmed the area. Despite this, ACARBIO recognized the potential of the place. They envisioned this shelter as a resting place for hikers, a playground in the woods for children, and a vivid camping site. Following this, ACARBIO in collaboration with locals, and youth workers scheduled dates to refurbish Refugio. With time, the cracks in the wall were filled, the ceiling was fixed, trash was sorted and removed, and the overall appearance of the place was starting to improve. As of today, the place still needs work done but with proper time and effort, Refugio will earn the name it deserves.

Event 1
1. Event name: School excursion “Discover Tramonti’s nature”
2. Event date: April 30, 2022
3. Event description:
ACARBIO had the pleasure to host the children from the school Giovanni Pascoli from Tramonti.
The day consisted of various nature-related activities. What started with a mesmerizing hike throughout the Monte Lattari. The children were able to observe the springs, in one of which the fire salamander takes refuge and reproduces, learn about the local fauna – diversity, nature preservation, and last but not least nature-survival skills. Once the group arrived at the Refugio, the children were divided into small groups with distinctive tasks. To briefly mention, some worked on Herbarium (identifying plants and flowers), how to use the smartphone to produce beautiful photographs of natural environments, how to map a place and how to learn how to sow new plants. In the end, the final message for the children was how to enjoy and live in symbiosis with nature. Furthermore, love and respect the environment. This is what ACARBIO tried to convey.

1. Event name: ACARBIO Work excursion Let’s build the Shelter!
2. Event date: 20.2.2022
3. Event description:
It is time to work! We made a working trip to the place of the Shelter. The new improved Shelter now has an improved ceiling, a dining table, a campfire site, and much more. The interesting part is that most of the material utilized to rebuild the shelter was collected from the surrounding woods. Therefore, we are trying to convey the importance of recycling and sustainability.
Furthermore, with more time and goodwill, the place will just keep getting more promising. The aspiration of ACARBIO is that one day the place will serve as a campsite for hikers, a new location for campers, and a new adventure for all nature-loving audiences.

Event 3
1. Event name: Outdoor adventure at the Shelter
2. Event date: 21.7.2022
3. Event description:
Time spent in community and time spent enjoying public spaces are crucial elements when talking about the motivation to reclaim public spaces.
An experience in Nature, an excursion in Tramonti, to the mountain shelter, to discover the mountain nature, and to share an amazing experience in a group – these were the objectives of this Excursion. We went on the 21.7. in the morning on the hike in a group of 20 international volunteers. First, we discovered the nature along the trail. There is a small fountain which is habitat to a local Salamandra and gives water to passing by animals, from small ones such as beetles or bees to big ones such as boars. We discovered some aspects of geology and the volcanic territory, and some players in the ecosystem, such as pollinators or lichens and mosses.
We had lunch as a picnic with sandwiches at the area of the Shelter, and in the afternoon we went up to the mountain top to enjoy the view over the valley of Salerno, Cava de Tirreni, Nocera. Then we set up the tents and prepared for the night. The next day, we had breakfast and hiked back. At the end of the pathway, we found a lot of trash left there by people visiting a nearby restaurant, so we spent an hour to collect trash and leave it at a place of waste collection of the municipality.
Creation of the museum and development of the outdoor space of the school to organize events in Kalamitsi
August 7, 2022Name of the place / building: Creation of the museum and development of the outdoor space of the school to organize events in Kalamitsi
Short description of the building/place:
This project was initiated in 2020. Solidarity Tracks’ volunteers, in collaboration with local volunteers from the village of Kalamitsi, started an effort to remodel the interior and exterior of the old primary school’s building which is currently used as a folklore museum. Residents and the local authority used it as storage space for several years as it was empty. Old objects, clothes, and household utensils from the early decades of the 20th century were collected and stored in the school building. The locals hoped for a local folklore museum. With the help of young people from the village, the volunteers from Solidarity Tracks carefully cleaned the objects using protective cleaners, painted and repaired some of them, and placed and set up the exhibits. Initially, they did personal research in order to understand the use of many objects they did not know and kept collaborating with the locals, exchanging knowledge and ideas.
The remodelling and renovation of the exterior of the building were reinitiated in late 2021. The artists working voluntarily with the “Solidarity Tracks” organization spend more than a month reconstructing the entire schoolyard. There were murals in the area which had been damaged due to the weather and local climate conditions. The volunteers started by cleaning and properly preparing the walls. In collaboration with the members of the cultural club of the village, they decided on the design inspired by the traditional Lefkadian embroidery and the traditional Lefkadian costume. The mural adorns all the walls around the courtyard, where many cultural events are held every summer. Anastasia, the artist working with Solidarity Tracks, designed a watermill inspired by the 14 watermills that used to exist in the village before being abandoned. The unique design used on the walls of the courtyard, inspired by the Karsaniko embroidery, attracts more people to the village, especially during summer. The general upgrading of the old school of the village has contributed to the cultural development of the village.

Municipal Indoor Gym of Lefkada
August 7, 2022Name of the place / building: Municipal Indoor Gym of Lefkada
Short description of the building/place:
The indoor gym is one of many buildings in the city of Lefkada which could have a facade redesign. It was asked by the municipality to propose and materialise a renovation of the facades by the artist and volunteers of Solidarity Tracks.
The building walls were painted and transformed into a completely different edifice. The main aim of the renovation was to create a new landmark. The use of the building is depicted on the facades with the use of modern graffitis.
The volunteers, in collaboration with the municipality, decided on the final design, and the process of painting started immediately. The building was structured with some rectangular “blind windows”, so for each square, a different motif was designed – related to a sports activity.
These murals show the variety of sports activities that can be facilitated there and, last but not least, the importance of sport and a healthy lifestyle.
